4 Day All the Way Freedom Walk
Explore the lesser known parts of Abel Tasman National Park and complete the entire Abel Tasman Coastal Track with accommodation at the unique Aquapackers, elegant Awaroa Lodge and luxurious Ratanui Lodge.
Day 1 - Totaranui to Wainui (Approx. 5 hours 15.5kms)
Pick up from your accommodation (or nearby) in the Nelson area at approx. 7am. Road transport to Marahau arriving at the AquaTaxi base there at 8.30am. AquaTaxi to Totaranui at 9am arriving there at 11am. Begin heading north by heading down the Grand Avenue where you will be on the less well travelled part of the track and come across the beautiful beaches of Anapai and Mutton Cove. If you wish to do an hour extra then head on out to Separation point (it’s a loop). Before long you will be at Whariwharangi Bay, this is where Abel Tasman the explorer unsuccessfully tried his only landing in New Zealand (he was repelled by the local Maori). Then it’s up and over the hill to the Wainui carpark where you will be picked up by our van for the short shuttle to Pohara Beach and Ratanui Lodge. Stay at the delightful Ratanui Lodge at Pohara Beach in Golden Bay
Day 2 - Totaranui to Awaroa (Approx. 3 hours 8.1kms)
A short shuttle from Ratanui Lodge at 9.30am will take you to Totaranui to begin your walk south on the section of the track known as the Rata Trail. From Totaranui there is an ascent over to Goat Bay and Waiharakeke Bay before coming to Awaroa Inlet a large tidal crossing. Once over the Inlet – make your way to wonderful Awaroa Lodge, and enjoy the Lodge and surrounds. Stay at Awaroa Lodge.
Day 3 - Awaroa Lodge to Anchorage (Approx. 7.5 hours 21.9kms or 18.8kms (6.5hrs) with available tidal shortcut at Torrent Bay)
Hike/swim/explore while walking from Awaroa Lodge to Anchorage. This is a big day but there’s still there is time to swim and laze on the famous golden sand beaches – Onetahuti and Bark Bay in particular. There are ascents and descents through regenerating native forest today and a spectacular swing bridge across Falls River. The beach at Anchorage is a perfect crescent shaped beach and you finish by walking along it. Enjoy staying on the Aquapackers Boat in Anchorage (A private cabin with shared bathroom)
Day 4 – Anchorage to Marahau (Approx. 4 hours – 12.4kms)
After a leisurely breakfast set off toward Marahau. There is time today to explore so you may like to check out Te Puketea Bay and Pitt Head (a Maori Pa site) before leaving Anchorage. There are many of those golden beaches on the journey to Marahau. Apple Tree Beach is a favourite. New Zealand native forests and Adele & Fisherman’s Islands on the other side of the Astrolabe Roadstead feature this day. Once at Marahau you might like to enjoy a cold drink at the Park Café, then our transport departs at 4.10pm from the AquaTaxi base arriving in Nelson at 6pm.
Please note - Part of the track is tidal and the tides (and accommodation availability) indicate the direction of the walk and this may change from the itinerary above, according to the tide timetable of the dates you choose for your walk.
